Tackle Tip 4 -Poor man's line counter reels

I have been having every increasing success running dipsie divers and as such I find I want to run more of them. Problem is I can’t afford to change all my reels over to line counters reels which is a necessary component to running the dipsie effectively. What I did to get around the problem until I could afford more Line Counter reels is run off 100’ of line and mark about a foot of the line with a black Sharpie marker at the reel. I then peeled out another 40 ft of line and marked it and again after another 40 ft.  I now effectively,  could tell when I had let out 100, 140, and 180 ft of line by the black marks on my fishing line. This is the range I most often run my dipsies in and if I wanted to run at 150 ft back then I let it out to the 140 ft mark and would only have to estimate the remaining 10ft. Far more accurate than estimating all the way from 0. From time to time you may find you have to re apply the mark with your Sharpie. You could even get different coloured markers if you want to take this method even a step further. Hope this helps improve your dipsie results. See you on the water.
