Yarn Flies

Simple and easy to produce by the hundreds, yarn flies imitate trout eggs. They can be tied big or small and my preference is to make them about the size of a dime. I figure this looks like a cluster of 2 or 3 eggs. Also, try mixing your yarn, two colors often out produce one.

Materials

  • Hook - Egg or dry fly size 10-14
  • Thread - Florescent orange 6/0 Uni
  • Un spun yarn

1. Prep the hook with a short section of thread wraps.

2. Tie down a section of yarn with 3-4 good tight thread wraps. Try and keep the thread wraps stacked on top of each other. Whip finish and trim off the thread.

3. Grab the yarn an pull it straight up. Pull up as firmly as you can without bending the hook and snip the yarn off with the scissors. The higher up you cut the larger the egg will be.

4. The finished Yarn Fly

6. Different patterns can be created by splitting a length of yarn and mixing it lengthwise with another, then repeat the steps above. Experiment, it's easy and cheap to scrap a fly and start over.
